“Phil is an amazing coach. He’s a student of strength and body movement. Not just getting strong, but efficient. He knows my limits and has helped me out a lot.” - Dustin Poirier, UFC Champion

From Fighter to Founder

Phil’s journey began as an athlete himself, competing in both MMA and collegiate football, giving him firsthand insight into the demands of high-level sports. His relentless pursuit of performance excellence led him to establish Daru Strong, a globally recognized brand that now represents the gold standard in sports performance, injury prevention, and recovery. Named Trainer of the Year five times, Phil has become a pioneer in the field, known for applying science-driven, sport-specific methodologies to optimize output in the gym and results in competition.

Methods That Deliver

What separates Daru’s system from the rest is his individualized, evidence-based approach to training. Each program is tailored to the athlete’s goals, sport, and physiological needs, integrating tools like:

  • Functional strength and power training
  • Plyometrics and reactive movement prep
  • Aerobic and alactic energy system development
  • Recovery and regeneration protocols

His work has been featured on ESPN, Fox Sports, and in major sports publications, highlighting both his impact and the growing recognition of his methods worldwide.

A Mission to Educate and Empower

Beyond the weight room, Phil is deeply committed to education. Through mentorship programs, online courses, and social media, he’s mentored thousands of coaches around the globe and continues to elevate the standard of training for the next generation of practitioners.

Whether through seminars, his Fight Ready book, or his certification programs, Phil is determined to share what he’s learned to help others train smarter, perform better, and stay in the game longer.

Phil Daru isn’t just transforming bodies; he’s reshaping the entire landscape of performance training. With a deep respect for the athlete’s journey and a relentless drive to evolve his craft, his legacy is already cemented among the greats.

Can you share your journey into the world of strength and conditioning? What inspired you to become a coach?

I started as an athlete myself, competing in football and later transitioning into professional MMA. I learned quickly that if I wanted to compete at the highest level, I had to understand how to train properly, recover effectively, and build real, transferable strength. Over time, I became obsessed with human performance. When I stopped fighting, coaching was a natural evolution. I wanted to give athletes what I didn’t always have: a system that actually prepares you for the demands of your sport and life. That mission became Daru Strong.

What are some of the most common misconceptions about strength training that you encounter among athletes and fitness enthusiasts?

The biggest one is that strength training makes you slow or bulky, especially in sports like MMA. Another is thinking more is always better; more volume, more weight, more soreness. That’s not training smart, that’s ego. True strength and performance come from proper intent, recovery, movement quality, and programming with purpose. It’s not just about how hard you go, it’s about how well you adapt.

How do you tailor your training programs to meet the unique needs of individual athletes, especially those in combat sports?

Every athlete is different. I look at their sport demands, training age, injury history, movement quality, and even their stress and sleep data. We start by building a strong foundation of movement and capacity, then layer on explosive power, speed, and sport-specific energy system work. Fighters are hybrid athletes—they need strength, power, endurance, and durability. Our programs are built with that in mind: concurrent, conjugate-based, and periodized around their fight camp or season.

Collaboration with healthcare professionals is crucial for an athlete’s well-being. How do you work with doctors to ensure your athletes’ health and performance are optimized?

It’s a team effort. I regularly coordinate with doctors, physical therapists, and even mental performance coaches. Whether it’s reviewing blood panels, discussing injury rehab, or modifying training based on lab markers, we stay in communication. The goal is to build high-performing athletes who can sustain success, not just peak for one moment.

Blood work can provide valuable insights into an athlete’s health. How do you incorporate blood work results into your training programs?

Blood work helps us go beneath the surface. It tells us how the athlete is truly adapting, not just physically, but hormonally, immunologically, and metabolically. If I see low testosterone or high cortisol, we dial back intensity or add recovery tools. If vitamin D, ferritin, or thyroid levels are off, we work with our nutritionist and physician to address them. Data drives decisions, and blood work is a key piece of that puzzle.

What specific markers do you find most important in athletes’ blood work, and how do they influence your training strategies?

The testosterone to cortisol ratio is a big one, showing whether the athlete is in an anabolic or catabolic state. I also look closely at hs-CRP and homocysteine for inflammation, ferritin for oxygen capacity, thyroid markers for metabolism, and fasting insulin for recovery and energy regulation. If these markers are off, we’ll adjust the training intensity, volume, and focus more on recovery, nutrition, and sleep protocols.

In your experience, how does proper nutrition complement strength training, and what advice do you give athletes regarding their dietary habits?

Nutrition is foundational. You can’t out-train poor recovery or a broken diet. Food is fuel, but also information, telling the body how to function. I preach nutrient density, protein sufficiency, and strategic carbohydrate timing around training. I also stress hydration, minerals, and gut health. We use blood work and symptom logs to fine-tune everything. You want to feel good, recover fast, and perform consistently? It starts in the kitchen.

Can you describe a particularly challenging case you’ve encountered while training an athlete and how you overcame it?

One case that stands out is a fighter who came in post-surgery with significant imbalances, chronic fatigue, and mental burnout. We couldn’t train hard at first and had to rebuild from the ground up through mobility, breathwork, cardiac output, and basic GPP. Gradually, we reintroduced strength and power once the metrics aligned. It took patience and trust. A year later, he was back in the cage and looked better than ever. Sometimes the best progress starts with pulling back, not pushing harder.

What role does mental resilience play in an athlete’s performance, and how do you help them develop this aspect during training?

It’s everything. You can have all the physical talent in the world, but if your mind breaks under pressure, none of it matters. We build mental resilience through controlled adversity, like sled pushes, alactic intervals, and fatigue drills that mimic competition. I also emphasize breathing, journaling, and routine. We train the body to be strong, but we also train the mind to stay calm, focused, and unshakeable.

Looking ahead, what innovations or trends do you foresee shaping the future of strength training and athlete performance enhancement?

The future is going to be even more data-driven and integrated: wearables, AI, personalized blood testing, and real-time recovery monitoring. These tools will give coaches and athletes the edge. But tech alone isn’t enough. We need people who know how to interpret it and apply it.

Also, mental performance and breathwork are gaining the respect they deserve. The more we understand the nervous system, the more precise we can be in training adaptation. The key is staying ahead, while always remembering that consistency, effort, and coaching still matter most.

Dr. Robert Martino is not your typical dentist. While he still carries the title and possesses the deep understanding of oral health that comes with decades of experience in the field, his role has evolved. Today, he’s the CEO, the “takes-care-of-all-the-crap guy,” as he jokingly put it, behind a thriving multi-office dental practice and the innovative oral care product, OraCare. His journey, sparked by a simple observation during a high school romance and fueled by relentless curiosity, has led him down a path of entrepreneurial success and a genuine desire to elevate the standard of patient care. A true entrepreneur, Dr. Martino has taken what he learned in dentistry and applied it to other endeavors. He is the founder and CEO of EASW, an international aircraft maintenance company. He also runs a statewide marketing company and is the founder of Freedom Day USA, a national charity that gives back to veterans, military members, and their families. Although he is very proud of being a dentist, it was just the start. From Small-Town Roots to Multi-Practice Leadership Dr. Martino’s entry into dentistry wasn’t a lifelong aspiration rooted in family tradition. Instead, it was sparked by the seemingly straightforward life of his high school girlfriend’s father, a dentist. “He would come home like clockwork at the end of the day after working in his dental practice, and I liked that,” Dr. Martino recalled with a chuckle, acknowledging the naïve simplicity of his initial perception. After dental school, he always intended to return to his hometown in central West Virginia. Starting with a single office that quickly became insufficient for a growing partnership, Dr. Martino and his partner strategically expanded, eventually building a network of seven thriving dental practices. For the past two decades, however, Dr. Martino’s focus has shifted from direct patient care to the operational and strategic aspects of the business. “I haven’t seen patients in twenty years. I’ve shifted to fully focusing on my responsibilities as CEO,” he explained, highlighting his role in managing HR, finances, and the myriad details that allow his clinical team to focus solely on providing exceptional patient care.

From Iowa Roots to Global Health Innovations Dr. Richard Downs, DDS, FAGD, FICOI, D-GMDIA, D-ASBA, embodies a remarkable journey of dedication and innovation within the realm of dental health and beyond. In an insightful conversation, Dr. Downs shared his life trajectory, from his formative years in rural Iowa to his distinguished career as a practicing dentist and his current groundbreaking work in developing wellness solutions. His story is a testament to a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a profound commitment to improving the well-being of others. Growing up in a small town, Dr. Downs experienced the close-knit fabric of a rural community. “I grew up in a little town called Montour, Iowa, right next to a reservation. My dad was good friends with the Native Americans living there. Montour was a rural small town with approximately 200 people,” he said. This upbringing instilled in him a grounded perspective that would undoubtedly shape his interactions with patients and colleagues throughout his career. His academic path led him through Montour Grade School and Marshalltown High School before he earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from the University of Iowa. Even in his early academic pursuits, a spark of innovation was evident. “I spent two years at the community college in Marshalltown with a Workship Scholarship in chemistry. That is how I got interested in developing products. My chemistry background from the Workship Scholarship ignited my interest in innovation.” Following dental school, Dr. Downs dedicated three years to serving as a Navy dental officer, an experience he recalls with pride. “I practiced three years in the Navy, right after dental school. I enjoyed my stay there. It was a great experience that I would do all over again.” This period not only refined his dental expertise but also instilled a sense of discipline and self-assurance. Reflecting on his decision to establish his own private practice in Iowa in 1978, he stated, “I felt more confident than most people who just started their practice immediately after graduation from dental school.” After a distinguished 42 years in private practice, Dr. Downs retired from clinical dentistry in 2020. However, his passion for enhancing health and well-being ignited a new chapter focused on product development.
